I attended a funeral for a friend last week.
She had been looking forward to retirement. She had been planning her bucket list with all she wanted to accomplish.
All the goodbye cake was eaten, and the farewells were said on her last day at work. Before she could leave, the doctor’s office called to give her the diagnosis of cancer.
She died 6 months later.
For all of our hoping, planning, and dreaming, the truth is no one knows what tomorrow will bring.
Do not boast about tomorrow,
For you do not know what a day may bring forth.
Proverbs 27:1 (NKJV)
Every December 31, we look back and are amazed at how many unexpected things happened during the year. We see the goals we accomplished or the milestones we’ve reached.
We remember the birthdays, anniversaries, and weddings.
We reflect on people who are missing in our lives for various reasons or those who’ve passed away.
Every January 1, we wonder what God has in store for us in the upcoming year. While I don’t know what the future holds, I know who holds my future.
Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.
James 4:13-14
I’m pretty sure there will be tough challenges in 2025. There will be times of smiles and laughter, as well as sadness and tears.
One thing I know for sure: whatever life may bring, it is in God’s hands. He is more than capable of seeing me through.
The key to living a full and meaningful life is to know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior. Faith in God provides a rock-solid foundation to steady us in this unpredictable world.
We can trust Him no matter what comes.

I love those verses from James as they have had an impact on how I "plan" things. When I was 13, my 12 year-old sister was killed in a car-bicycle accident just a few months after our family had moved 2000 miles to a new state. She and I both had committed our lives to Jesus a couple of years earlier, so I had the comfort of knowing not only where she is, but that I will see her again. That was in 1969, and two passages of scripture became very important to me after this incident: Romans 8:28 and James 3:13-14. Thank you for the gentle reminder of just who is really in control of our futures, no matter what the circumstances may be. Blessings to you for 2025!
