Have you ever listened to a speaker who made you feel you could “leap tall buildings in a single bound” like Superman?
The task of every graduation speaker is to give an inspiring message to send the new graduates off into the world with hope. A dynamic speaker can ignite a firestorm in one’s heart to make them feel like they can do anything.
God used Joshua when he gave many great speeches to uplift and encourage the Israelites on their long journey to the promised land. They often needed to hear inspiring words to keep going when they wanted to collapse under difficult struggles.
The speech found in Joshua 22:5 is clear and to the point. He reminded the people of the timeless truths Moses had given them many times. It is still as important today as it was all those years ago.
He lays out the essential directions for every follower of Christ:
Love God.
In this world, never love anything more than God. It then becomes easy to lose focus and stray. (see Matthew 22:37-40)
Walk in His ways.
Following God’s ways provides guidelines and boundaries to keep us on the straight and narrow path. (see Psalm 128:1)
Obey His commands.
Obedience brings blessings. Disobedience produces difficulties. God grants forgiveness, but there are consequences to sin. (see 1 John 2:3-6)
Hold fast to God.
Actively seek God while you cling to Him. He is our everything; don’t casually wander away. We must never take Him for granted. (see Deuteronomy 10:20-21)
Serve Him with all your heart and soul.
You either serve God or Satan; there is no in-between. Commit 100% to Him. Serving God makes life worth living. (see Matthew 6:24)
While Joshua’s words don’t provide detailed answers to every specific problem we face, it gives the basic principles to follow.
Let’s take time to evaluate. Are we doing these five things in our daily lives?
.
I am inspired by Joshua's words shortly after the passage you refer to. (From memory so please forgive any errors) "Chose this day whom you will serve, but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."
Such great reminders, thank you!
