Feeling a Little Lonely This Holiday Season?
Biblical Encouragement for when loneliness creeps up on you.
When was the last time you felt lonely? It happens to everyone, including me.
Loneliness creeps in when we find ourselves lacking meaningful connections.
If you are looking, you can see lonely people all around you.
Maybe it’s the older woman in the pew ahead of you sitting alone because her husband of 63 years has passed away. Now she attends church by herself.
Maybe it’s the man in his 50s who attends the work Christmas party alone because this is his first holiday after a divorce.
When we feel we are not noticed or valued by others, sadness can occupy our hearts.
Loneliness can make the holidays difficult.
The Bible tells of many who found themselves feeling a little lost and alone.
#1 - King David was abandoned by many close to him.
He was betrayed by many people.
He wrote in Psalm 25:16 (NASB 1995),
“Turn to me and be gracious to me, For I am lonely and afflicted.”
#2 - Leah was lonely in her marriage to Jacob.
He was tricked into marrying her. She knew he preferred her sister Rachel.
Genesis 29:30b
”and indeed he loved Rachel more than Leah,”
#3 - Joseph felt disregarded and alone as he spent years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit.
At one point, he had hope for being released, but he was abandoned by the one person who could help him.
Genesis 40:23
“Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.”
We are never forgotten or deserted by God. At times, we may feel completely disconnected from others.
With God, there is fellowship. There is deep connection. There is love.
If you are a Christian, God promises to never leave you alone.
Hebrews 13:5b
“…I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,”
If you are not a Christian, the Lord can save you.
John 3:16 (NASB 1995)
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
If you are going through a time in your life where you’re feeling a bit detached from others, the first step is to get connected with God. He can fill your life with joy.
Exactly what I needed today. God bless.
Praise God for his comfort and sustaining power when a season of loneliness overtakes us! That Bible verse about God drawing near when we draw near to him (James 4:8) seems especially true when we're feeling alone. He's so good to us!
