This has been a sad week for me.
I lost a friend.
I thought it was odd she hadn’t replied to my message.
She died of a heart attack before she had the chance.
A few days ago, my aunt had to be put in a nursing home.
She can’t care for herself.
My list could go on, but this is a 1-minute devotional.
Is anything making you downhearted today?
It could be broken relationships,
hurt feelings,
neglected needs,
prodigal children,
or failing health.
It’s not uncommon for Christians to experience sadness due to many of life’s imperfect circumstances; it’s part of the human experience.
Here are 3 things you can do when you’re sad:
Draw near to God.
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
And saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18 (NASB 1995)
We are blessed because God desires to nurture and comfort us.
Psalm 23 paints a beautiful picture of how God is our Shepherd who leads us through the valleys.
Focus on God’s goodness.
“Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.”
Psalm 42:11 (NASB 1995)
When He is our true source of hope, His light shines brightly before us, and sadness becomes the shadow behind us.
Let God comfort you.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NASB 1995)
God is the great Comforter. He brings joy, peace, and solace to our souls.
He cares about your unique situation (see 1 Peter 4:7).
As Christians, it’s not wrong to feel down. After all, we know it doesn’t last forever.
“Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning.”
Psalm 30:5b (NKJV)
*If you feel your sadness is not improving over a long period of time or it is interfering with your daily functioning, please consider asking for help.
So sorry for your loss and all of the other reasons causing your sadness. Thanks for your encouragement that you share, in the midst of your own suffering. May God bless you and keep you 💓
