Reconnecting When You Feel Distant From God
The 4 action steps David did when he felt far from God.
Have you had times where you know God is there, but He just feels so far away?
It seems your prayers aren’t heard, you feel empty, and you don’t have peace.
How can God feel so far away when the Bible tells us we couldn’t get away from Him even if we tried?
Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
(Psalm 139:7) NKJV
For those who have a real relationship with God, the truth is - His presence is constant. The Holy Spirit lives in our hearts.
David, in Psalm 13, helps us know what to do when we feel distant from God.
Seek His face. (Ps. 13:3-4)
David cries out to God, asking how long this feeling of distance will last.
We shouldn’t wait around until our feelings change, but actively ask the Lord for a renewed faith and sense of His presence.
Trust in His unfailing love. (Ps. 13:5)
David’s faith was present even when he didn’t feel it.
His heart’s foundation was his trust in God’s love.
Rejoice in what God has done. (Ps. 13:5)
God has brought us out of the dark place we were in. (Ps. 40:2-4)
He’s forgiven our sins, and we are a new creation. (2 Cor. 5:17)
Praise the Lord in thankfulness. (Ps. 13:6)
David’s life didn’t always go the way he wanted it to, but he didn’t stop praising God.
Having Jesus in our hearts gives us the ability to be thankful in spite of our circumstances.
Wrapping it up
Remember, feeling like the Lord is distant doesn’t make it true.
Even when we don’t feel close to our spouse, the fact is we are still married.
Feelings can be based on our whim for the day. Truth is what matters.
If you are feeling distant from God today,
search your heart
renew your faith
believe you cannot get away from Him
God’s feelings for you and His presence have not changed. It is up to you to take action and address the situation. Don’t let another minute slip by before crying out to God.
Very good word. He is always near - desiring our attention. We need only believe and draw unto Him. Thank you.
I remember a bumper sticker back in either the 70s or 80s that said, "Feel far from God? Guess who moved?" As we draw near to him, he draws near to us.
