My Reader’s Best Advice for Christians

They came through with great nuggets of wisdom.

I recently attended a wedding where the couple asked guests to write their best marital advice, and it gave me an idea.

Everyone can learn something from someone else’s experience, so I asked my readers what advice they would give to a new Christian.

I was blown away by the responses.

Hearing the wisdom from experienced Christians benefits all of us.

Here’s a summary:

1 - Study the Bible.

Studying, not just reading, is imperative to your growth as a Christian.

A good place to begin would be the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). Romans is another good book for beginners.

Establish a daily devotional routine.

2 - Pray.

• Part of building a relationship with God is talking to Him.

• Prayers don’t have to be fancy. He hears and understands what’s in your heart.

• Ask for wisdom and understanding.

• Fight your battles on your knees.

3 - Join a Bible-believing church.

• A church doesn’t exist for your entertainment or amusement. A church must stand for and against what is taught in Scripture.

• Find a church where you will learn how to study and understand the Bible.

• A pastor is only human and will make mistakes. It’s important not to put them on a pedestal. Test their instruction against the Bible. There are many false teachers leading our churches today.

4 - Find a mentor.

• Ask a seasoned Christian to work with you. If you don’t know of someone, ask your pastor or deacon to make a suggestion.

5 - Remember these things:

• Following and serving God is a daily choice.

• God has a plan for you; everything doesn’t happen overnight, be patient. Mistakes will happen. Cooperate with God as He reshapes your life.

• Problems do not disappear when you become a Christian, life will not become easy. Don’t give up.

• God is the only one who won’t let you down, so don’t put all your hope in other Christians, your pastor, or the institution of the church; they will disappoint.

• Leave friends who will inhibit your growth and sinful habits behind. The Lord will guide you in this area.

• The enemy is real and will continue to try to discourage and destroy you.
