Most people think joy is an expanded form of happiness.
Happiness comes when you win the big game or laugh with good friends. It can’t be maintained for long periods of time because the source of those feelings will eventually fade with the memories.
However, joy is deeper and more sustainable because God is the source.
“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16:11 (ESV)
The unchanging aspects of His divine character create joy within our hearts. Some examples include:
His lovingkindness Psalm 21:6
His sovereignty Colossians 1:17
The gifts to His children give joy as well:
His gift of salvation Habakkuk 3:18
His gift of eternal life John 3:15-16
Christians are the only ones who can experience true joy because of their personal relationship with God. They understand the undeserved gift of salvation and grace given to them.
In Psalm 51, David knew he had broken fellowship with God through his sin and desperately wanted forgiveness and joy restored.
“Restore to me the joy of your salvation…” Psalm 51:12
You can know what it is like to experience a joy that is not dependent on your life’s circumstances. For example:
Paul and Silas had joy when they were able to praise God after being beaten and locked in a prison cell (Acts 16).
Daniel had joy when he was trapped in the lion’s den, wondering if they would attack (Daniel 6).
Job had joy when he lost everything but his life (Job 1-3).
No matter what you’re going through, joy can fill your soul while experiencing true gratefulness for all God has done.
If you aren’t feeling the joy, spend time contemplating God’s character and the gifts He’s bestowed on His children.
The Holy Spirit will help you find joy in abundance.
