3 Ways Christians Can Overcome Loneliness
There is hope if you feel loneliness in solitude, suffering, or sorrow.
It can happen when we are by ourselves or in a crowd of people. It can happen to those who’ve lost someone they loved, whether it be a spouse, family member, or friend.
Even great men of the Bible, like the Apostle Paul, had times of feeling alone.
In 2 Timothy 4:16, Paul tells us everyone had deserted him. How discouraging.
If you are facing loneliness, here are some action steps:
1. Draw Near to God
James 4:8a (NKJV) Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.
We are created with a space in our hearts that only God can fill. He must be the center of our lives.
Without a relationship with God, we can have many friends and still feel lonely or empty inside.
God promises never to leave us alone.
Hebrews 13:5b For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
We draw near to God through prayer and reading the Bible.
2. Serve Others
We need to think beyond ourselves and what we are missing.
The best way to feel better about your life is to contribute to someone else’s.
Volunteering is a great way to help others and meet new people.
Check out opportunities at the local food bank, animal shelter, hospital, cancer center, Meals on Wheels, etc.
It’s hard to be lonely when you are focused on serving others.
3. Participate in a Small Group
Try attending a Christian group where there is an opportunity for fellowship. Examples include Sunday School, Bible studies, or prayer groups within the church.
If you’ve tried in-person groups with no success, try online Zoom Bible studies or something similar.
Conclusion
While everyone goes through times of loneliness, God never intended for us to get stuck and go through life feeling this way.
John 10:10b I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
God wants us to have full and meaningful lives.
Sometimes, conquering loneliness can take time and courage. Ask God to help and give you direction.
