If you’ve ever tried to force things along in your Christian walk to get the results you want, you know it doesn’t always go as planned.
Sarah tried this. In Genesis 15:5, the Lord told her husband, Abraham, that his offspring would be as numerous as the stars in the sky.
There was just one problem. She had never had a baby and her child bearing years were over.
After some time had passed, nothing happened, so she decided to take matters into her own hands and believed she could help God’s plan. She asked Abraham to have a child with her maidservant, Hagar (Genesis 16:2). This way, she could get this promise moving along.
Of course, the plan didn’t go well because it wasn’t God’s plan.
Sarah wanted the same outcome as God, she just didn’t think God was working fast enough.
Sarah and I have something in common. In spite of having the best intentions, I often want to give things a little push in the right direction.
My desire to forge my own way and find my own solutions keeps me from seeing I’ve actually left God in my rearview mirror.
I end up walking a step ahead of Him when I should be walking a step behind.
He should always be leading me, never following me.
In fact, I should be gripping the hem of His garment so I never get lost.
When we are trying to navigate down life’s road, here are three simple prayers.
1. Lord, show me what I’m doing wrong.
2. Show me the right thing to do.
3. Help me be obedient.
That’s it.
No matter how good my intentions are, if He’s not first in everything, all my good works don’t matter.
No matter how organized or calculated I am, if I’m not humbly submitted to Him, all my accomplishments don’t matter.
I need help to see when I start walking faster than God because usually I’m oblivious to it.
Maybe you can relate.
Let’s let God lead and obey Him. He will take care of the timing and the details.
Wait on the Lord;
Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on the Lord!
Psalm 27:14 (NKJV)
I love your devotions, so full of truth and practical application, Kate!
Words of wisdom as always Kate. Thank you.
